High School Non-Departmental Classes

Student Council
Student Council teaches leadership skills and offers students realistic opportunities to apply these skills. The course includes theories of leadership, debate, problem-solving, speech-making, committee work and citizenship development. Much of the time is also devoted to organizing and participating in supervising school activities and events (including a major school wide fundraiser). PREREQUISITE: 2.0 Cumulative GPA and no ‘F’ grades from previous semester, selection by ASB cabinet and approval by ASB Advisor

Woodshop
This course is designed for students with or without experience with woodworking tools and machines. Emphasis is on correct tool use, machine set-up and operation, safety, project solving, material use, and positive conduct in-group shop association. Basic finishes of oil, wax, stain and lacquer are used. Assessment is based on a project and a safety test point system. Woodshop is not considered as fulfilling the fine art requirement at MHS or in the CSU system.

T.A.'s for the SDC/IS Class
Working directly with Middle and High School Special Education students, helping them with class assignments such as: reading aloud, helping them with math work. Responsibilities also include assisting the teachers with preparing and correcting class work and organization of the room. The most important responsibility is interacting in an appropriate and positive way with the students, such as being a good role model, helping them with their social skills and language development.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
AVID is an academic elective class offered to students who would like to prepare for four-year universities. The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note taking and study skills, and college/career/motivational activities. The AVID class is an elective. College students are in the classroom as tutors twice a week and field trips are taken to universities in the area. Students must commit to taking notes in subject-area classes on a daily basis. Other requirements for applicants are satisfactory citizenship, good attendance and a GPA of 2.0 - 3.5. PREREQUISITE: Minimum 2.0 GPA, teacher/counselor approval of application and interview.

Assistance Center
A class designed to provide students with additional structure and academic support. Organization and accountability will be stressed along with providing opportunities to work on existing projects, papers and assignments. The call is not “just a study hall” and will be a graded class. Assessment for the class is dependent on how much of an effort the students make in trying to better themselves and make themselves more prepared to navigate the world. PREREQUISITE: Administrator/Counselor referral
