Dear Shark Community,
I regret to inform you that we will be canceling Open House this Thursday due to the Norovirus Outbreak within our district. Last week a meeting was held in Santa Monica where Superintendent Drati, district staff, and medical doctors from the LA County Department of Public Health, spoke about our response to the Norovirus outbreak within the district. All schools, including our school, have been directed to take strict precautions to eradicate this virus, which includes hand washing/sanitizing, increased cleaning, and exclusion of those who are presenting symptoms. Our school has been asked to continue with these precautions until each school reaches its baseline numbers. Each school is being monitored individually and we will be able to resume activities when our own level of new cases of students presenting with vomiting or diarrhea is within what is typical for our school, referred to as baseline.
Data shows that last year, between August – January, we sent home an average of 3-4 students per week with gastrointestinal illnesses. Since the outbreak, we have sent an average of 7 students per day (still above the baseline numbers). We are hopeful that in the coming days and weeks we will be back to baseline and our school will be cleared to resume the all awesome activities that make MHS great!
While Open House has been cancelled, I encourage you to continue communicate with teachers about your student’s progress and to utilize Illuminate to monitor that progress. Also, please support our talented students by attending any and all of the following activities later this year:
• POMS on March 31st to talk about 8th grade transition and high school athletics
• The High School Play April 27th – 30th
• Senior Awards Night May 11th
• Our end of the year music performances: Band on May 18th, Choir on May 25th and Orchestra on June 2nd
Even though Open House is cancelled, we still will have a 12:35 dismissal. All other upcoming activities will be determined on a case-by-case basis. At this time, we have no other upcoming events that have been cancelled or postponed.
We hope that extra cleaning, extra precautions on students returning to campus, and continued mindfulness of the current situation will help to bring us back to our baseline numbers soon.
Thank you for your cooperation and flexibility as we all work together to get our kids and staff healthy.
