MONDAY MESSAGE: April 16, 2018

Dear Shark Families and Friends,

Testing season is here.  Middle school and 11th grade students will start their English Language Arts components of the CAASPP test next week.  The following week we will see our students taking the Math component. Next up will be AP testing for high school students starting May 8th.

All of our music groups competed this past weekend down in Anaheim and blew it out of the water.  Our students represented our school and community so well that they also earned the coveted Esprit de Corps award, which the competition considers to be their highest honor. This was even with many obstacles, not having time to warm up, having to change plans multiple times, not having their director, etc.   To quote Dr. Zander, “But through all of this turmoil, our students were calm, considerate, respectful, responsible, helpful, and always accommodating of others. I received tons of compliments from the venue manager and the competition director, and apparently other music teachers were so impressed with our kids that they specifically requested that our students be recognized for their character.”  We are so proud of our students and a special thank you to all the staff that helped make this possible.

We are in the home stretch of this year.  Celebrations are right around the corner. Stay focused and go Sharks!

Drummond Sisters of Malibu High: ALL

On the tail of her third Gold Key win for the 2018 Western Regional Scholastic Writing Contest, Charlotte Drummond, Junior at Malibu High has received her and the school's first ever NATIONAL Gold Medal for the Scholastic Art & Writing Contest this year. She won for her Personal Essay/Memoir called "Love Letters" about her special bond with her 'California Granny' Sonoma artist, Penelope MacNaughton who passed away in November, 2014. The awards ceremony will take place at Carnegie Hall in NYC on June 7.

Trinity Rose Drummond (Freshman)  was selected to perform the National Anthem at this year's LA Marathon that took place on March 18, 2018 to the 25,000 participants. She has previously sung "God Bless America' at the event. Trinity arranged an acoustic version of The Star Spangled Banner and was thrilled to sing it live on guitar to a very emotional crowd at the event.

The girls are best friends and spend their free time writing songs and hanging out together.

CAASPP Testing - April 23 - May 4,  and May 22 for Twelfth Grade Science: ALL

Each spring, students in grades three through eight and high school participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).

This year, your child will take the following test(s), depending on his or her grade level:

  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in English language arts/literacy (grades six through eight and grade eleven)

  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in mathematics (grades six through eight and grade eleven)

  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in Science (grade eight and grade twelve)

The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are online tests that measure what your child knows and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support he or she needs to be successful in school.

California is in the process of implementing the California Next Generation Science Standards. As part of that implementation, students in grades five, eight and twelve will try out a new test called the California Science Test, or CAST.

To learn more about either the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

You can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Web Portal at http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html.
