PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
 
Dear Parents and Friends,
 
We are only one day away from the start of the 2017-2018 school year.  One message i need to reiterate, there was a lot of construction and there will continue to be construction throughout the year.  We will do our best at keeping you up-to-date and informed, but I will ask for your patience and flexibility in this realm.  Two things I do want to highlight about the construction.  The offices are now located in the middle of campus next to the new gym and high school quad.  This includes Administrators, Counselors, Attendance, Registrar’s Office, the Nurse and the Bilingual Community Liaison.  Second, pickup and drop-off will look similar to last year, but just as it was the second half of the year last year we have limited space for pickup and drop-off.  I recommend coming early for drop-off and coming late for pickup.  Please do not come early for pickup, this only creates a backup down Morning View Dr.
 
This year our staff will be looking at current practices to see how we can stretch our students thinking and critical skill.  We will focus on poises questions and asking students to do tasks that require students to push beyond the book and make connections between concepts, to their daily lives and the world around them.  In addition, we will continue our Olweus work and introduce social justice standards that will build on their relationship with others.

What I learned last year is that our students strive for excellence, do and want to do new and amazing things and care about others.  The work that we will do this year will continue to build on this.

SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
WELCOME TO THE MONDAY MESSAGE: ALL
The Monday Message is a weekly email created for parents and includes school news, announcements, a calendar and details about upcoming events. The Monday Message is sent via email to all parents on Monday mornings and posted online at http://malibuhigh.org/news_monday_message.  If you are not receiving this message via email, please contact Laurie Morgan at lmorgan@smmusd.org to be added to our mail list. We are always looking for ways to improve school-to-home communication. REGISTRATION FORMS: ALL
If you missed Get Your Stuff Day all the documents you need to complete the registration process can be found on the Malibu High School webpage, http://malibuhighschool.org/registration.  Take the completed forms to the Attendance Office.
 
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: ALL

»Cafeteria Services/Lunch Menus includes lunch menu, cost and how to pay for lunch meals online or at school, where students eat on campus and information about Free and Reduced Price Meals.  
»Grades, Online Access Illuminate is our online gradebook and a valuable tool for parents to stay informed on student progress and attendance. 6th grade parents will receive a letter with an access code soon. New parents in grades 7- 12th should email their counselors for an access code. Be patient, the parent portal will be updated for the new school year shortly. TRAFFIC SAFETY, DROP OFF AND PICK UP, PARKING AVAILABILITY: ALL
Please visit the school website Malibu High School - Home for a detailed outline of drop off and pick up locations.  We encourage parents and students-that drive-to leave early and plan ahead for traffic.  We will continue to discourage parents from dropping students off on the long drive way but rather in the front of school.  The theatre gates will be open for students.  Please keep in mind:
•    Drop off and pick up is still located at the front of the school.-The gates have been moved back to accommodate this process.
•    Students will enter campus from the theatre gates.
 
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: ALL
There has been a lot of work done on campus this summer.  Here are some highlights:
•    The middle school building has been completely demoed.
•    The administration and library buildings are just days away from demolition.
•    New bathrooms are almost complete in the D (100’s and 200’s) building.
•    A brand new track!
•    Windows, doors and floor along with some other projects have been completed in most of our music and arts classrooms.
We are now gearing up for the next phases that include completion of many of these projects along with the completion of the new parking lot and the most exciting will be the start of the new middle school, administration and library.
 
OPENING WEEK OF SCHOOL:
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: EVERYONE
The first day of school is TUESDAY, August 22. High and Middle school students will pick up their official schedule in the New Gym.  Mr. Sferra, Mrs. Dahm, and Mrs. Nickerson will also be in the new gym and available to assist students.  ASB representative from both the high school and middle school will be in the gym and sprinkled throughout campus ready to assist student locating classes.  Once students receive their schedule they will then proceed to the first period class shown on the official schedule.  Even if students believe there is an error, they are to attend all the classes shown on their official schedule.  There are no schedule changes the first day of school.  Note for 6th graders who have Physical Education (PE) 1st period: Middle School PE teachers will be outside on the blacktop on upper campus where they will meet their 6th grade students on the first day of school. High School begins at 7:50 a.m. and Middle School begins at 8:00 a.m. Click here to view the Bell Schedule.  
 
HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULE CHANGES:  (9-12)
Seniors will be able to schedule appointments to see their counselor starting Thursday, August 24, juniors on Friday, August 25, Sophomores Monday, August 28, and Freshman Tuesday, August 27.  Dr. Weissman will be available to schedule appointments for students during lunch in the High School quad.
 
PTSA MEETING: C-19 ALL ARE WELCOME
Please join us in room C-19 for updates and announcement related to school.  If you do not know where room C-19 is please go to the main office for directions.

NEW PARENT ORIENTATION:  ALL (6th grade parents and all new to the school)
On the first day of school (August 22) we will be hosting another new parent orientation.  If you are a new parent or have an incoming 6th grader please join us after the PTSA meeting in room C-19 to learn about resources and gain information about MHS.

LOCKER ASSIGNMENTS: ALL
Middle School:
•    Mr. Tucker will work with students along with Mr. Greene to distribute lockers and locks.  Each student will be given instructions on how to operate the locks and will also have several opportunities to open and close them to ensure proper usage.
PE Lockers:
•    PE lockers will be distributed to students the first week of school.  PE teachers will work with students to ensure they are comfortable opening and locking them.

PE CLOTHES AND DRESSING OUT: ALL
If students need PE clothes please see Mary Slawter in the Student Store or place an order online.  Students will NOT be dressing out for PE the first week of school, they will wait to get a locker assigned
