MONDAY MESSAGE: December 11, 2017

Dear Shark Families and Friends,

Last week was very hectic at best.  Thank you for your help and cooperation while we ended school early on Tuesday and closed school last week.  While I have lived in Southern California for over 17 years, this was my first time experiencing  the effect of Santa Ana winds on Malibu and how real the threat of fire is to this community.

If you haven’t heard, one of our own has been affected by these current fires.  Linh Nguyen, our College/Career Counselor lost everything due to the fire early Tuesday morning.  Her family was able to get out safely, but only could grab diapers and a bottle for her 6 month old baby.  I know that PTSA and the Malibu Methodist Church are looking to help.  We will get information out when we have it.  Also, Tiffany Martin, one of Malibu High’s students, set up a GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/ms-nguyen-fire-relief-fund and wanted us to share with our Shark family.

I also wanted to give you an update on the construction/traffic detail worker, Jae, who was injured two weeks ago in a car accident in front of school.  Jae suffered multiple fractures in his leg and is recovering now.  If anyone would like to send well wishes, the main office can coordinate getting these to him.

On a different note, Congratulations to Claudia Lane who is now the two-time Foot Locker National Cross Country Champion.  On Saturday at Balboa Park she ran a 17:03 5k, winning by 19 seconds.  She is the first to win back to back Championships since 1997.    Because of this win Claudia has been asked to represent the USA in the Great Edinburgh Scotland Cross Country Championships on Jan 7th.  Way to go Claudia!!  Go Sharks!!

Take care and Go Sharks,

Cheli Nye, Ed.D.

Principal, MHS

SHARK FUND: ALL – JUST A FEW MORE WEEKS UNTIL THE END OF THE 2017 TAX YEAR!

                                               https://thesharkfund.kindful.com

A big thank you to all of the generous donors who have helped kick off our funding drive this year.  We’re over halfway to our goal of $450,000 for the full 2017-2018 school year!

If you have not participated yet, please consider making a donation in December and benefit from a TAX DEDUCTION for this year.

You can do a one-time or recurring contribution.  $2,000 per student per school year is suggested;  all amounts large and small are most needed and appreciated!  And all the contributions to The Shark Fund are used directly at Malibu Middle & High School, for the special programs in  Arts/Theater/Athletics/Student & Teacher Development and more.

To contribute, please visit our secure donation site:  https://thesharkfund.kindful.com.  Or mail a check to The Shark Fund, P.O. Box 608, Malibu, CA  90265.  For more information, please visit:  www.thesharkfund.org

Special Benefits in Donating Stock to the Shark Fund

FYI, it is an amazing chance right now to donate stock – with the stock market at all time highs, many people own stock that has appreciated a lot in value.  If you contribute stock that has gone up 50-100%, for example, you don’t have to pay ANY Capital Gains Tax on that gain, and you also get the full value of the deduction on the day you donate the stock to the Shark Fund, at the current market value on that day.

So, The Shark  Fund, being a registered non-profit, has a double tax advantage.  This adds up to a lot of savings for you.  We invite you to help in this way, and wanted to make sure you knew about this special opportunity.  If you would like to donate stock, please contact:

There is still time to do it to benefit for the 2017 tax deduction!
