SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

HEALTH UPDATE:  ALL
As you may have heard, John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica was closed Friday due to a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness that has affected about 90 JAMS students and staff. The decision was made after careful consideration and in adherence with the recommendation by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH).  We are unaware of any cases of this illness affecting Malibu students at this time and we are continuing to monitor the situation.  Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, stomach cramping, headache chills and more. If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, please keep him or her home and alert the school nurse. LADPH asks that any student with this illness be kept home for three days after symptoms subside, including tiredness and weakness, because they are still contagious during this time period.  For more information visit, www.smmusd.org.

NO SCHOOL: ALL
Malibu High School will be closed Monday, February 20, 2017 in observance of President's Day.

REALITY PARTY FOR PARENTS: ALL
Many adults feel drinking and drug use is a rite of passage. They assume teen parties are the same as when they were young. Straight Up youth want parents to face the current realities of today’s “out of control” teen parties – competitive drinking games, fights, random hookups, and even sexual assaults.  At Reality Parties, parents tour a home set up as a teen drinking party, with youth actors portraying common party activities and voicing concerns expressed by local teens and young adults. After each performance or tour, Straight Up facilitates community dialogue, with a panel to answer questions and discuss ideas for change.  Interested Parents please sign up for tours at the February 25th Malibu Party at http://straightupvc.org/realityparties/.  Student Volunteers who wish to participate as Cast Members for community service learning hours may sign up at the volunteer link at the same site to be interviewed.  Only Juniors or Seniors who can commit to donate the entire day (9:00 am to 7:00 pm) should apply.

CAASPP STATE TESTING: GRADES 6-8, 10, 11
Students in grades 6-8 and 11 will take CAASPP state testing for English April 17-21, immediately upon returning from spring break. Students in grades 6-8, and 11 will take CAASPP state testing for Math April 24-28.  Students in grade 8 and 10 will also take a pilot Science test between April 24-28.  We are publicizing these dates early because of their proximity to spring break.  Daily attendance is important every day including these state testing days.  Students are encouraged to bring their own headphones during testing dates.

SAVE THE DATES: GRADES 8 AND 12
High School Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, June 8 at 2:00pm.  Carpooling is going to be a necessity with the large construction project.  Middle School Promotion will take place Friday, June 9 at 9:00am.  The 8th grade class party will be from 12:00-3:00 at La Costa Beach Club, with buses leaving from Malibu High School after the promotion ceremony and reception.
