SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS   


WEATHER: ALL
It is great to have rain, it would have been nice not to get it all at once.  Please remind students of basic precautions in the weather (ie: no running, avoid mud and large puddles, wear appropriate clothing including coats and especially appropriate shoes, etc).  Also given the new portable classroom locations umbrellas are recommended.

2016-2017 Middle School Yearbooks on sale NOW!  Order your MS Yearbook on yearbooksforever.com or pick up an order form in the Main Office.  Middle School Parents – This is the last week you can order a yearbook with your child’s NAME stamped on the cover.  ALL NAME STAMP ORDERS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JANUARY 26TH.  NO LATE ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED! This only costs $10.00 and can be purchased online at www.yearbookforever.com when you purchase the yearbook or in the Student Store even if you have already purchased their yearbook.  Remember the deadline for the YEARBOOK price increase is approaching.  Purchase the yearbook for $35.00 before February 1st, otherwise the price goes up to $50.00.  Purchase  now and SAVE!!
  

THIS WEEK AT MHS


ARTS ANGELS MEETING: ALL
Our next Arts Angels meeting will be on Tuesday, January 24,  2017 at 8:30 a.m. in room C19.  Check in in the office and you will be escorted or directed to the new location.  We'll be discussing upcoming events, fundraising efforts, and our overall goals to support the Arts in both the Middle and High Schools.  If you have ideas to share, want to hang out with nice parents for an hour, or would simply like information as to what Arts Angels is all about, please join us!!!   

PTSA MEETING:ALL
Join us for out next PTSA Association Meeting on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 8:30 a.m in room C19.  This is a general association meeting and a great way to stay involved and support all that is happening at MHS.  There will be discussion about an upcoming parent education reality party sponsored by PTSA and StraightUpVC. The event will include a staged party and party discussion and is an event all parents will benefit from. Please park in our parking lots, sign in in our main/attendance office and then you will be directed/escorted to the new location.  

COLLEGE ADMISSION NIGHT: HIGH SCHOOL
Don't miss out on the College and Career Center's biggest event of the year on Thursday, January 26 at 5:30pm! We encourage all students and parents grades 9 - 12 to attend the College Admissions Night to learn about the college admissions process.  You will have the option to choose from a variety of workshops designed to help you prepare for the college admissions journey.  Although this program is geared towards high school, middle school students and parents are welcome to participate. Wonderful for the entire family to come! 

POMS MEETING: MS
This month's Parents of Middle Schoolers (POMS) meeting will be at 8:30am on Friday, January 27 in room C19. This is your chance to hear updates about the middle school program and discuss everything middle school with the middle school assistant principal, counselor, and other Malibu Middle School parents.  Please park in our parking lots, sign in in our main/attendance office and then you will be directed/escorted to the new location.

CSF/CJSF SPRING MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: GRADES 7-12
Malibu High School students have the opportunity to join the California Scholarship Federation (9-12) and California Junior Scholarship Federation (7-8)  honor societies.  These honor societies are different from the school honor roll and eligibility is determined by the CSF/CJSF.  Malibu High will have their Spring Membership Drive from Tuesday, January 31- Friday, February 3, 2017.  Eligible students should find Mr. Sferra, Mrs. Dahm, and Mrs. Nickerson at the CSF table at lunch in the cafeteria area to sign up - they will be there Tuesday through Friday. Bring $5 membership dues and your January 2017 report card. Members of CSF/CJSF are eligible for the Universal Studios Field Trip and will be recognized at a breakfast on Thursday, March 16, 2017.

SPIRIT WEEK: HS
Coming up at Malibu High School is Winter Spirit Week!  January 30th through February 3rd is Malibu's annual Winter Spirit Week.  This year's spirit days include: Sweats and Suits (Monday, 30th), Sorority and Fraternity (Tuesday, 31st), Hippies and Hipsters (Wednesday, 1st), Surfers and Skaters (Thursday, 2nd), and Sharks and Minnows (Friday, 3rd).  Following the dress up days, there will be a pep rally for students on Friday for the Boys basketball game at Santa Paula. 
   
PROMOTION PARTY PLANNING MEETING: GRADE 8
The first planning meeting for this year's 8th grade Promotion Reception and 8th Grade Class Party will be at 8:30am on Tuesday, January 31st in room C19.  Both the reception and class party have become awesome events for our promoting students.  These events are planned and coordinated by parents!  We need your help.  Please join us at this first meeting to see if there is way you can be of help.

WINTER FORMAL: HS
The Winter Formal will be held at Dukes on Saturday February 4th from 8:30pm-10:30pm.  Tickets for the winter formal can be purchased from the student store the week of the dance or at the door.  More info to come.

SHREK: ALL
Mark your calendars! The middle school theater department will present Shrek: The Musical from February 9-11 at 7:00pm and a matinee on Sunday February 12 at 2:00pm.  This is the only middle school performance of the year!  More information including how to purchase tickets will be available soon.

CAASPP STATE TESTING: GRADES 6-8, 10, 11
Students in grades 6-8 and 11 will take CAASPP state testing for English April 17-21, immediately upon returning from spring break. Students in grades 6-8, and 11 will take CAASPP state testing for Math April 24-28.  Students in grade 8 and 10 will also take a pilot Science test between April 24-28.  We are publicizing these dates early because of their proximity to spring break.  Daily attendance is important every day including these state testing days.  Students are encouraged to bring their own headphones during testing dates.

ACT BOOTCAMP: 
Saturday, February 4th and Sunday, February 5th. 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM.  ACT Bootcamp: Juniors- Are you taking the ACT on February 11th and want advise on key strategies on how to approach the exam?  Tired and True will be here Saturday, February 4th and 5th from  9:00 AM- 1:00 PM to assist you. SERVICE LEARNING


ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS:
Beginning next week, January 23rd through the 27th, our Volunteens Club will be hosting a travel size toiletry Drive to make hygiene kits for the Downtown Women's Center. Collection boxes will be placed in various classrooms across the campus so please be generous and donate your travel size toiletries to help the many women in need.

High School Service Learning opportunity:
If you would like to help out with the Malibu Youth Basketball League please sign up for a block of time with Kristin Riesgo at kriesgo@malibucity.org. The teams will play for the next three Saturdays (Jan. 28 - Feb. 11) from 9 am - 7 pm in the Old Gym at Malibu High. Assistance is needed with setting up, cleaning up, and scoring.


COMMUNITY NEWS

NAMI: NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 12-session education program for family, partners, friends and significant others of adults living with mental illness. The course is designed to help all family members understand and support their loved one living with mental illness, while maintaining their own well-being. The course includes information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and other mental health conditions. Thousands of families describe the program as life-changing. The program is taught by trained teachers who are also family members and know what it is like to have a loved one living with mental illness. NAMI Westside Los Angeles, the local organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will offer its NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program, beginning Jan. 17th to March 28, every Tuesday, 6:00-8:30 pm.  It will be held at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 28211 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu 90265.

CONGRATS: Congratulations to Malibu Middle School's Josh Speer who auditioned with the SoCal School Band & Orchestra Association in December and made it into the SoCal All Stars Middle School Honor Jazz Band, a small, 15 musician band.  He will perform at their upcoming conference.  Way to go!
