Congratulations!  The US News and World Report released their rankings (just one measure) and we are doing awesome!  It is nice to receive positive recognition for the work our staff and students do!
 
We are again ranked as a GOLD school and number 45 in CA, 279 in the nation.
  
Over the last 3 years we have improved each year: 2017: (CA) 45  (Nation)  279
2016: (CA) 53  (Nation)  351, 2015:  (CA) 68  (Nation)  360.  Tell your neighbors: We have a comprehensive, neighborhood, public  high school offering a wide range of programs with tremendous family support which is leading to GREAT student success, and it is free.

TEACHER APPRECIATION: ALL  
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 8-12, 2017. We can’t wait to #ThankATeacher with you!  This year’s theme is “Teachers Deliver.” And they do! Teachers deliver so much to our students—inspiration, motivation and, ultimately, their futures. From May 8-12, 2017, we would like to celebrate teachers and deliver our thanks and gratitude to them.  Teachers change the lives of millions of children every day, and their work and impact extends far beyond the boundaries of the classroom.   Join us during NationalPTA Teacher Appreciation Week to #ThankATeacher for all that they deliver to our nation’s children.  This is not the time for large gifts, but rather small thank you's to ensure teachers know the impact they have had and the appreciation we have for them.

SUMMER SCHOOL: ALL
Malibu High School's 2017 high school summer school information and application are available both online or pick up a copy from your high school counselor. Please return to your counselor by May 5. The application is for credit recovery for a D or F grade, as well as for Get Ahead Chemistry or Geometry.  Additional information about middle school summer programs can be found here.

INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM 2017-2018: ALL 
If you are interested in the Independent Study Program for next year, you should see your counselor for an application.  Deadline is Friday, May 12th

TDAP REQUIREMENT: GRADE 6
All 6th grade students are required to turn in proof of a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria & pertussis ) booster which must have been administered on or after their 7th birthday. Proof is due by May 1, 2017 for entry into the 7th grade.  More information here.

STAR PROGRAM: MIDDLE SCHOOL
At our most recent POMS meeting, parents expressed a desire to have more information about what their students were learning about drugs, alcohol, and healthy choices during the STAR presentations in their Science class.  Deputy Jake who presents the STAR program at Malibu schools has a website that contains summaries of the presentations and should help facilitate follow up conversations between the student and parents.  You can find the webpage here and then find Malibu Middle on the left side.

8TH GRADE PROMOTION: GRADE 8
DEADLINE TODAY!!!!  8th Grade Parents—Please do get your party RSVP in TODAY with a check if your child is attending the promotion afterparty. We are looking for 100% attendance. Don’t let money stand in the way – scholarships and reduced rates available. Do help make this celebration special. Please sponsor or make a donation of any amount. MSEF MEETING: ALL

Please Join THE MALIBU SPECIAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION for our monthly meeting:  An evening of Support and Advocacy.  WEDNESDAY, MAY 3, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm.  Held in a relaxing home environment, we offer support for parents of children with special needs who struggle with figuring out the special education system, finding developmentally appropriate support , and how best to function at home and at school.  This month we will have two guest speakers, Lauri Sarafino and Nidya Parades.  Both have worked at the Special Education Advocacy Clinic at Pepperdine University.  Please RSVP to msefbu@gmail.com if you plan to attend.

STATE OF OUR SCHOOLS ADDRESS: ALL 
Please join us for this first annual report from our new superintendent, Dr. Drati.  Learn more about our district's Excellence through Equity plan for student achievement and how you can contribute your ideas and comments online toward this important work. For your convenience, this presentation will occur in three separate locations throughout the district.  The Malibu HS Pathway presentation is Mon., May 15 from 6:00-7:30pm at Webster ES: 3602 Winter Cyn., Malibu.  Child care and simultaneous Spanish translation will be provided.  

ART SHOW: ALL
The Districtwide Visual Art Show will take place at the Santa Monica Art Studios (3026 Airport Ave., Santa Monica, Ca 90405) on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 5-8pm. This show premiered last year in the new amazing Santa Monica Art Studios space and we had almost 500 attendees! The purpose of the show is to highlight the district’s visual art curriculum and highlight the accomplishments of our talented students and teachers.  The Samohi Jazz Combo will perform during the show and there will be food and beverages available as well.

SSC MEETING: ALL
The final School Site Council Meeting of the 2016-2017 school year will take place Thursday, May 18 at 3:15pm in room C19.  The majority of the meeting will be spent discussing priorities for the 2017-2018 school year.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

SPRING BAND CONCERT: ALL
Dont miss the last opportunity to see our Malibu High bands perform on Thursday May 18 (Last week's message had the wrong date) at 7:00pm at MHS. It is always a great show!

PTSA HONORARY SERVICE AWARDS: ALL  
The annual PTSA Honorary Service Awards ceremony will take place on May 25th, and deserving individuals will be honored for the service and commitment to our students and school community.  We are now accepting nominations for deserving recipients.  Nomination forms can be found in the main office and can be returned to the President’s box when completed.  Is there someone you feel has gone the extra mile, or someone you feel deserves recognition for doing an outstanding job at MHS?  Please consider nominating that special person.  Nominated individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to the well being of children, youth or families in Malibu High School or Malibu can be considered for this award. SPRING CHOIR CONCERT: ALL
Come join the MHS Choirs on Thursday, May 25th at 7:00pm for our Spring Concert as we celebrate music from many different countries of the world. It will also be an evening to recognize and appreciate our seniors and their accomplishments. We look forward to sharing our hard work and passion for music as we come to an end of a very successful year! 

SPRING ORCHESTRA CONCERT: ALL
The final orchestra concert of the year will take place Friday, June 2 at 7:00pm.  Admission is free, please join us to support our wonderfully talented music students.

SAVE THE DATES: GRADES 8 AND 12
High School Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, June 8 at 2:00pm.  Carpooling is going to be a necessity with the large construction project.  Middle School Promotion will take place Friday, June 9 at 9:00am.  


COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER NEWS

Parents of Seniors: Final transcript request form are available online this year. ALL seniors will need to fill this out in order for us to submit their final official transcript to the college where they will be attending this Fall. They can find this form here: http://www.malibuhigh.org/collegeandcareercenter. $5.00 cash for all transcripts will also need to be submitted to Ms. Nguyen ASAP. Please have your student fill out this form.

May 11th is Senior Awards Night at 6:00 PM in the auditorium. Students who will be receiving a scholarship or award will be notified this week. Parents will also receive an invitation via mail this week. Please direct any questions to Ms. Nguyen at lnguyen@smmusd.org.  

Parents of Juniors: College Application bootcamp- Monday August 14th- Wednesday August 16th. Malibu High School is excited to offer this opportunity to help your student prepare for what's ahead in the college and admission process. This bootcamp will be three days from Monday August 14th- Wednesday August 16th from 8:30- 12:30 PM. During this bootcamp, we will offer activities, guest speakers, and materials to get you organized and feeling confident in the college admission process! Some key topics we will focus on:

- The Common Application 
- College Essay/Personal Statement
- Naviance set up (letters of recommendation, college list, transcript request) 
- How Admission office reviews applications and what they look for 
- Financial Aid and Scholarships 
- Organization and a College Application Timeline

 SERVICE LEARNING


The First Annual Malibu Festival is happening this Sunday, May 7 from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm (volunteers are needed from 9:30 am - 6:30 pm) at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School, 30237 Morning View Drive. This is the first ever unified fundraiser/festival within the Malibu Elementary schools. 100% of the money raised goes equally to Juan Cabrillo, Webster, and Pt. Dume Elementary schools. Earn Service Learning hours by joining the Sierra Service Project. This is for students entering 9th grade through 12 grade. Youth groups will help complete home repair projects in the San Diego area and also help beautify the San Diego Canyonlands.
