Dear Shark Families and Friends,

I had a fantastic time this weekend at the Shark Fund’s Fun-raising Party on Saturday.  A big thank you to the Case Family for hosting and to the entire Shark Fund for creating such a great event.  I also want to give big kudos to Arts’ Angels for organizing the amazing student talent that performed (and of course thank you to the students who performed too).  Thank you to all that came and really a big thank you to everyone who gives to the Shark Fund. Your generosity is much appreciated and allows MHS to do so many great things for our students.

We have many students to celebrate.  We had twelve 8th and 9th graders compete at the Optimist Club Oratorical Competition at Pepperdine.  Freshman Fionny Darmawan took first place, eighth grade student Julia Carroll took second and Freshman Emma Carroll took third.  Thank you to Mrs. Lapajne and Mr. Mayle for encouraging and supporting our students through this process. Go Sharks.

Spring athletics are almost coming to a close.  Boys volleyball just finished up a solid season, last league games for Baseball and Softball are this this week and Swim and Track have already competed in League Finals and we have many students moving on to the next round.  I want to give a big congratulations to Liz Boland for earning Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet at League. This award is voted on by all the coaches at the meet and Liz was selected. Great job Liz and all the Spring athletes.

We are finishing up most of our State testing today and tomorrow we start AP testing.  As our high school students finish their AP tests, our eighth grade students will start their exit interviews.  There is a lot for prepping and studying going on here at Malibu. Only a few weeks left in the year, finish strong.

Go Sharks!

Cheli Nye, Ed.D.

Principal, MHS

From the Shark Fund: ALL

The Cinco de Mayo Fun-Raising Party was a huge success! It was a beautiful evening held at a gorgeous Malibu residence with 300 people in attendance generously supporting the Shark Fund with their ticket purchases, auction bidding, and direct donations. There was plenty of live music performed by talented students with 10 different acts: Violinists from the MHS orchestra started things off, there were solo singers, guitarists, a rock band, and even a jazz funk band. The food by Monrose Catering was great, and it was an atmosphere of real community celebration — then DJ Patsy Palmer took it to the next level by packing the dance floor!

Thank you to everyone who came for supporting our school and students. Students are our future, and investing in them is critical.

Special thanks to: Saffron Case Homes and Tim Case, Chris Cortazzo, Larry Green, Monrose Catering, Tami Gordon and her hard-working team, and all of our sponsors.

Announcing the FloWater Prize Drawing Winner: ALL

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the FloWater fund at the Shark Fund Cinco de Mayo fun-raiser party. You helped to raise an additional $3,490 in designated funds to provide ongoing access to filtered water for our students and school staff. Everyone who donated $100 or more was entered in a drawing to win a Winery Tour and Tasting Experience at Nan Helgeland’s Martian Ranch and Vineyard in Santa Ynez…and the winner is: Kristin Kohn! Congratulations, Kristin, and thank you, all, for supporting environmental efforts at MHS! For more on Malibu resident and winery owner Nan Helgeland, check out this article:

Share Your Views and Help Shape the Future of the Malibu Library at the Library Needs Assessment Town Hall Meeting on May 9: ALL

The City of Malibu and the County of Los Angeles are holding a Town Hall Meeting to discuss the future needs and services of the Malibu Library as part of the Library Needs Assessment on Wednesday, May 9, 7:00 PM at Malibu City Hall. The City and County are currently conducting the Library Needs Assessment to evaluate library services and community needs as part of the development of a long-range plan for the Malibu Library. The results of a recent online community survey about the Malibu Library needs and services will be presented during the Town Hall Meeting. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions and share additional thoughts on library collections, programs, services, and facilities, which will be incorporated into the Needs Assessment. In 2005, the City and County of Los Angeles Public Library conducted a Malibu Library Needs Assessment to determine the library service goals and enable the County Library to provide services more closely tailored to the community’s needs. A new Needs Assessment is being prepared in 2018 to update the community's goals for the Malibu Library in order to determine future enhancements that will meet those goals.

No RSVPs are needed. For more information, visit or call 310-456-2489 ext. 254 or email
