Monday Message: October 9

MONDAY MESSAGE October 9, 2017

Hello Malibu Families and Friends,
October is Anti-Bullying Month and I want to let you know some of the programs that MHS offers and participates in with regards to this topic.  All students 6th-9th participate in the Olweus Program through their classes.  This program talks directly about bullying and indirectly by talking about how we treat each other.  Deputy Jake is on campus monthly to talk to students about a variety of topics many that include bullying adjacent.  We offer our Click and Delete assembly to our middle school students. This program focuses on cyber-bullying and negative behaviors via online interfaces.

You may not know that my dissertation was on cyberbullying.  Although it is only three years ago that I did my research, this field is ever changing and can be hard to stay in the know of the new forums. While the platforms change, the message stays the same, if you see something, say something.  Every platform has a place to alert their company if the posts or usage is harassing, bullying, or dangerous. I encourage you to stay familiar with the apps that your child is using.  Most phone systems have a way to monitor the apps that have been downloaded. I have also included a handout that was created in conjunction with the Orange County Sheriff on phone apps and why some could be potentially dangerous for students attached to the email.

On a bit lighter note, the School Site Council met this past week to work on Malibu High’s Single School Plan.  We are focused this year on increasing students higher order thinking skills, deepening academic language and ensuring students have a voice in campus issues.  I am truly excited about the work that is being done to further student learning.

I hope everyone has a great week.  Go Sharks!

If you have been unable to login to the Illuminate website to view grades, please reach out to the counselors so that they can provide you access. CONSTRUCTION UPDATES Construction updates from the district can be found here.  The url is On the MHS website, click About Us>Campus Modernization/Construction. There is an orange graphic link on the home page too.

THE GREAT SHAKEOUT - October 19, 2017

On October 19, 2017, our school will participate in the Great California ShakeOut - a State-wide earthquake drill. Everyone will practice how to drop, cover and hold on, and teachers will discuss the importance of earthquake preparedness with our students. This is the chance for us all to practice what to do during earthquakes to reduce potential injuries.

Earthquake preparedness is a responsibility of all Californians and we encourage you to also discuss earthquake readiness with your child and others at home.

PTSA Presents a Parent Ed Event…  Every Fifteen Minutes…  Thursday, October 26 at 7 PM, MHS Auditorium: ALL

Please join us for this important event, where we will be screening Every Fifteen Minutes, filmed in 2015 at MHS, and featuring MHS parents and students.  Every Fifteen Minutes depicts a fatal car crash involving distracted teenage drivers and focuses on the aftermath of the accident, including legal proceedings and a student funeral.  Counselors and law enforcement officials will be present to discuss the presentation and take questions.  This event is relevant to everyone with a teenage driver in the house!  Parents from all grades are encouraged to attend and high school students are also welcome.  This is not suitable for middle schoolers.  Every Fifteen Minutes is usually presented in front of a live high school audience during school but the current construction project makes it impossible for us to facilitate that production this academic year.  Ideally, every high school student at MHS will see this production at least once before they graduate.  This is an important film and will hopefully stimulate lively discussion between parents and new drivers!

There will be a brief PTSA Association meeting at 6.30PM followed by the screening at 7PM.  Snacks will be provided by PTSA and we encourage you to come and see this excellent film for yourself.

Please contact Suzanne Gelbart with any questions at

This year’s theme is “Within Reach.”  Categories include visual arts, literature, photography, music composition, dance, and film.  Entry forms and Rules are available in the Main Office. Entries must be submitted to Sarah Ryan in the library no later than October 13th.
