Monday Message: May 8

Dear Parents and Friends,

It is Teacher Appreciation Week and we have so many fantastic teachers to appreciate. Teachers will stay with you for a life time.  I often talk about my high school Calculus teacher, Mr. Porter.  By the time I had him, he had already taught my sister, mother and father.  He was brilliant and kind and there was an ease in his style of teaching which now I know only comes with practice, patience and a deep love for the profession.

Our teachers show not only a deep love for the profession, but also a great commitment to our Malibu community and its children.  I once saw a poster for all the things that a teacher is responsible for in any given day: motivator, inspirational coach, cheerleader, peace keeper, security, counselor, life coach, nurse, custodian, daily reminder, engineer, shoe repairman, etc.  And all this on top of teaching 180 students, all with different needs, wants and skills.  Teachers work well past the bell and not just on grading and lessons.  The first Turkish president, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said, “A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.”

When it comes to appreciation, sure a gift card to the local coffee shop is great, but what I have treasured most is the hand-written notes that talk about how I impacted a student.  I keep them and from time-to-time go through them.  I hope that when I am old, retired and missing the profession I will still have these cards to read through and remember the impact I had on my students’ education and life.  I would encourage your students to write a note to their teachers to tell them the impact they are having on your student’s education and beyond.

“A teacher effects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” – Henry Adams

On top of Teacher Appreciation Week, Wednesday is School Nurse’s Day.  With all the work with Norovirus this year on top of her normal bumps, bruises, sniffly noses and upset stomachs, Anne Ernst deserves more than one day and big “Thank You” for all she does to help keep our students well and cared for.  Thank you, Anne!

While we are appreciating, I want to voice my appreciation of all the parents of our students and their work with our students, on and off campus. It truly takes village and we have an outstanding one here!

Go Sharks!

Cheli Nye, Ed.D.

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 8-12, 2017. We can’t wait to #ThankATeacher with you!  This year’s theme is “Teachers Deliver.” And they do! Teachers deliver so much to our students—inspiration, motivation and, ultimately, their futures. From May 8-12, 2017, we would like to celebrate teachers and deliver our thanks and gratitude to them.  Teachers change the lives of millions of children every day, and their work and impact extends far beyond the boundaries of the classroom.   Join us during NationalPTA Teacher Appreciation Week to #ThankATeacher for all that they deliver to our nation’s children.  This is not the time for large gifts, but rather small thank you's to ensure teachers know the impact they have had and the appreciation we have for them.

Malibu High School's 2017 high school summer school information and application are available both online or pick up a copy from your high school counselor. Please return to your counselor by May 5. The application is for credit recovery for a D or F grade, as well as for Get Ahead Chemistry or Geometry.  We strongly encourage all students that have received a semester grade of D or below to attend summer school to maintain their eligibility to apply to a four year college. Additional information about middle school summer programs can be found here.

Follow the link for the May lunch menu. Please note the last day to accept checks for meals is Monday, May 15th and the last day to make payments on line at is Monday, May 22nd.

TDAP REQUIREMENT: GRADE 6 All 6th grade students are required to turn in proof of a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria & pertussis ) booster which must have been administered on or after their 7th birthday. Proof is due by June 1, 2017 for entry into the 7th grade.  More information here.

WHEN YOUR STUDENT IS SICK: ALL  Parents and students should not be texting or calling each other to get picked up because of illness. Please remind your child to ask their teacher to allow them to go to the nurse who will assess them and make the phone call home if necessary.

At our most recent POMS meeting, parents expressed a desire to have more information about what their students were learning about drugs, alcohol, and healthy choices during the STAR presentations in their Science class.  Deputy Jake who presents the STAR program at Malibu schools has a website that contains summaries of the presentations and should help facilitate follow up conversations between the student and parents.  You can find the webpage here and then find Malibu Middle on the left side.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity for your teen to gain “real” work experience and valuable job readiness skills. Summer internships are available through our partnerships with Malibu businesses and surrounding areas. Job Readiness Training covers resume and cover letter writing, interviewing and public speaking skills, and much more! Interns will receive a $200.00 stipend upon completion of the program and a 50 hour internship. Job Readiness Training is offered May 15th - May 26th from 3:00-4:30pm and  June 12th - June 23rd from 10:30am to 12pm. Applications are available at The CLUB and in the MHS Main office. Please call Mayra Herrera at 310.457.2582 for more information.

***DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MAY 15TH!*** We have had a great response, but hope to have every 8th Grader join the Endless Summer Beach Party and are still missing about 50 RSVP's.  PARENTS:  Please confirm with your child that they turned in their RSVP form - backpacks can sometimes be a black hole!    If you haven't seen the invite or lost the forms - you can find everything here (including a list of our generous sponsors):   follow this  link.   We have plenty of tickets sponsored, so don't let the $70 ticket fee be a hurdle to attending.   Questions or interest in sponsorships?
